9 - The Calendar
I recently started understanding how powerful a digital calendar can be. I had tons of things I wanted to do and I thought it was just a matter of scheduling them on my calendar. So, I started at first with one item per half hour. I then filled up my calendar with all of the things I wanted to accomplish. I quickly noticed that if too many items were on a given line, it was hard to read. So, I spaced them out to ensure there were no more than four items for a given half-hour block. Now, I was ready to get these tasks done and to reach my different goals. Except for one problem: simply putting items on the calendar didn’t mean that other demands for that same time would go away. Thus, I may have erased a couple of the completed tasks from the calendar. However, I still had a hundred items. So, the next day started and I dragged and dropped each item from the previous day to the next day. I had come up with a few new items to fit on the calendar. One of them would go to 5 AM and the other to midnight. It was not possible to read them if there were more than four items per half-hour block. I continued this process until I realized a calendar makes a lousy task management system. I also lost the sense of empowerment I originally had and was left helpless. There had to be a better way.
“This seems so simple, but it is amazing how much a calendar can change your life! . . . By using a calendar, you allow yourself to stay focused, motivated, and disciplined towards reaching your goals. You also learn to take responsibility for important actions that need to be done.” - Maristella Bacod-Gebhardt, Counselor, “How to use a calendar effectively! ” 1 , Sacramento City College
This is why we don’t want to skip over this commonly used but often misunderstood tool.
